PROFILE

Professor John Derera, a native of Zimbabwe, is the Head of Breeding at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). He combines technical and business qualifications. He is a specialist in maize breeding, quantitative & biometrical genetics. Prior to joining the IITA, John was the Global Head of R&D for Seed Co Group. He is also a professor of plant breeding at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN, South Africa) and African Centre for Crop Improvement (ACCI). He inspires development through sustainable agriculture, food security & capacity building. He is an accomplished publisher, researcher and research supervisor for MSc and PhD. He provides capacity building support to regional institutions, including the University of KwaZulu-Natal, West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI), Makerere University Regional Centre for Crop Improvement (MaRCCI), Pan Africa University (PAU, University of Ibadan, Nigeria), Midlands State University (Zimbabwe) and University of Limpopo (South Africa), among other institutions. His board services include Science & Impact Executive Board of the International Wheat Yield Partnership (IWYP, www.iwyp.org), Soybean Innovation Laboratory (SIL, www.soybeaninnovationlab.illinois.edu), Advisory Board of the Makerere University Regional Centre for Crop Improvement (www.marcci.org), African Plant Breeders Association (APBA), Crop Science of Zimbabwe (CSSZ) and Improved MSc for Cultivar Development (Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, www.agra.org). His recognition includes Africa’s 20 most influential plant breeders award in 2020.
