Clare Mukankusi is a Senior Scientist working as the Global Breeding Lead of Common Bean at the Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT). She oversees the global common bean breeding program vision and operations across the bean breeding hubs and leads the implementation of systems, procedures and guidelines for effective product development. She supports the global breeding program operations that range from trait discovery to breeding for biotic stress resistance (pest and disease resistance), abiotic stress resistance (drought and low soil fertility) to bio fortification (high iron and zinc grain content) which are priorities in Africa, Latin and Central America region. She has over 15 years of research experience in plant pathology, plant breeding, and legume seed systems. She manages the common bean breeding program at the Kawanda regional crop improvement hub (common bean) of the Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT in Uganda, a task that involves directly supporting National Agricultural Research Systems in Africa under the Pan Africa Bean Research Alliance (PABRA). She holds the Distinguished Achievement Award (2017) in recognition to her outstanding scientific accomplishments relating to bean improvement from the Bean Improvement Cooperative (BIC). Clare Mukankusi Mugisha holds a PhD in Plant Breeding from the University of KwaZulu Natal, Republic of South Africa, MSc Crop Science (Plant pathology) and a BSc Agriculture of Makerere University, Uganda.
